Introduction
The International Symposium on Cities and Conservation celebrates the United Nations Year of Planet Earth 2008 by bringing together researcher, policy makers and experts to critically assess the capacity, management and financing of conservation in cities and promote innovative practice ib integrating across diciplines and promote partnership to reduce threats and enchance sustainability.
The Syposium is organised by the Insitute of Environment and Development (LESTARI) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the Easten Regional organization for Planning and Housing (EAROPH) in conjunction with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Heritage, Ministry of Culture and Heritage as well as Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management of the IUCN of Geological Science (IUGS-GEM) and the Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas of the World Commission on Protected Areas of IUCN.
Objective:
The aim of the International Year of Planet Earth is to demonstrate new and exciting ways in which Earth Science can help future generations to meet challenges involved in ensuring a safer and more prosperous world. In this context the Symposium seeks to:
• Widen understanding of systems, structures and policies that promote conservation in cities.
• Disseminate the experience of regional conservation approches and research to the global level.
• Facilitate partnerships among various networks that support conservation efforts in cities.
